Darryl Friesen is a Lecturer at the Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba, specializing in Piano and Musicianship Skills. He teaches in Room 340 Taché Hall at the Fort Garry Campus in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Friesen’s research and creative works focus on piano performance and musicianship education. He maintains a large private studio of students and is a faculty member at the Rosamunde Summer Music Academy, where he works as a collaborative artist and coach. His performances as a soloist and collaborative artist have been acclaimed across Canada, the United States, Europe, China, and Brazil, with frequent features on CBC Radio.
He has received numerous awards, including:
- Sylva Gelber Foundation Award (Canada’s most talented classical artist under 30)
- Nancy Kennedy Wustman Memorial Award in Vocal Accompanying at the University of Illinois
- Grand Prizewinner of the CBC Arts Encounters Young Performers Competition
- Lawrence Genser Memorial Scholarship at the University of Manitoba
- Finalist in the International Stepping Stone Competition and Canadian Music Competition
Friesen has collaborated with distinguished artists such as Andrew Wan, Elliot Madore, the Adaskin String Trio, and the Martha Graham Dance Company. He served as rehearsal pianist for a memorial concert featuring Frederica von Stade, Elizabeth Futral, Richard Leech, Thomas Hampson, and Samuel Ramey. His teaching and performance activities are central to his academic contributions.
