Ben Bolden is a Professor of Music Education and UNESCO Chair of Arts and Learning at Queen’s University, Canada. He holds a BMus from Carleton University, a B.Ed. from OISE/UT, an MMus from the University of British Columbia, and a PhD from the University of Toronto. His research focuses on transformative arts education, creativity, arts-based methodologies, teacher knowledge, and assessment strategies in music and visual arts classrooms. He has published widely in journals such as Review of Education and Music Education Research, and serves on editorial boards for The International Journal of Research in Aesthetic Arts and Canadian Music Educator.
Dr. Bolden is an award-winning composer, with works like Tread Softly (2016 Diane Loomer Award) and Snow (2022 Da Capo Competition Winner) performed globally. His compositions often explore themes of cultural identity and social responsibility, such as Lord Franklin, which was commissioned by the Cantabile Choirs of Kingston. He actively promotes interdisciplinary arts education through initiatives like the UNESCO Associated Schools Network and the SSHRC-funded Viva Voce project, emphasizing global collaboration and innovative pedagogical practices.
His work bridges research and practice, advocating for curriculum reforms that prioritize creativity and holistic learning. He has contributed to national dialogues on music education policy and teacher professional development, particularly in addressing challenges faced by international students and fostering inclusive music programs.
