Dorigen Caldwell

Dorigen Caldwell is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Historical Studies at Birkbeck, University of London. She holds a PhD from the Warburg Institute (University of London, 1998) and has been affiliated with Birkbeck since 1998. Her research focuses on Early Modern Italian art, particularly Counter-Reformation Rome, Marian cults, and symbolic imagery like imprese. She has held a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2020) and a Leverhulme Study Abroad Studentship (1999).

Teaching modules include Renaissance and Baroque art history, art theory, and Rome's urban history. She supervises doctoral research on topics like Medici court culture, Roman Baroque architecture, and Renaissance symbolism. Caldwell is co-convenor of the Murray Seminar in Medieval and Renaissance Art and convenor of the Rome Lecture Series.

Publications span articles on Counter-Reformation art, edited volumes on Rome's historical identity, and book chapters on papal patronage. Her media contributions include BBC documentaries and podcasts on Italian art history.
