Karen Lloyd is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art at Stony Brook University, affiliated with the Department of History. She specializes in Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, focusing on papal Rome’s socio-political dynamics in art patronage, production, and reception. Her research explores collecting practices, Bernini’s sculpture, and early modern devotional imagery.
She earned her Ph.D. from Rutgers University and holds the Series Editor position for Visual Culture in Early Modernity (Routledge). Her first monograph, Art, Patronage, and Nepotism in Early Modern Rome (2022), examines how cardinal nephews leveraged art to legitimize their power. She co-edited A Transitory Star: The Late Bernini and his Reception (2015).
Her articles span themes like Bernini’s techniques, early modern collecting, and transatlantic artistic exchanges. Key works include analyses of Baroque altarpieces, cardinal nephews’ Ottoman relations, and anatomical curiosities in Renaissance collections.
Lloyd received grants from Queen’s University, the French Academy in Rome, and the Kress Foundation. Her research bridges art history with political and religious history, emphasizing visual culture’s role in power dynamics. Current projects explore Bernini’s later career and the materiality of Baroque sculpture.
