Ianthi Assimakopoulou is an Assistant Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, affiliated with the Department of History and Archaeology within the School of Philosophy. Her research focuses on Renaissance art history, particularly the interplay between antiquity and later periods, with a specialization in Medici patronage, iconography, and political symbolism. She holds a PhD and MA from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, complemented by postgraduate studies at the Warburg Institute and the National Gallery of London.
Her work includes curating exhibitions such as “Echoes of Antiquity in El Greco’s Oeuvre” and organizing international workshops on topics like Arion in European art and Longinian ideas. Key publications include monographs on Medici visual dialectics and Benvenuto Cellini’s Perseus relief. Her research explores how ancient themes—mythological, historical, and philosophical—are reinterpreted in later art, emphasizing layered meanings and cultural continuity.
Recent articles analyze ancient motifs in Christian art (e.g., Meleager’s migration to Renaissance depictions), Pan’s symbolism in Florentine neoplatonism, and digital tools for art exhibition engagement. She is preparing workshops on Longinian aesthetics and Studioli studies, reflecting ongoing engagement with Renaissance intellectual and artistic networks.
