Professor Panagiotis Marakos serves in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens' Faculty of Pharmacy. His academic career spans over four decades since earning his Pharmacy degree (1982) and PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry (1987) from the same institution. He teaches core undergraduate courses including Pharmaceutical Chemistry II/IV and laboratory techniques, alongside graduate-level Advanced Medicinal Chemistry.
His research focuses on medicinal chemistry with emphasis on anticancer drug design, antiviral compound development, and cardioprotective agents. Key areas include:
- Synthesis of pyrazolopyridine derivatives as cytotoxic/angiogenesis inhibitors
- Development of H₂S-releasing hybrids for cardiovascular protection
- Nucleoside analogues targeting viral replication (HCV/fungal transporters)
- Senescence biomarkers and senolytic platforms for aging-related pathologies
His collaborative network includes prominent researchers like N. Pouli, N. Lougiakis, and international groups in cancer biology and gerontology. Current projects involve micelle-encapsulated senolytics and dual adenosine receptor antagonists with therapeutic applications in oncology and cardiovascular disease.
