Emeritus Professor Donna Davies is a leading academic at the University of Southampton, specializing in respiratory diseases. Her research focuses on mechanisms of asthma, COPD, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and viral-induced exacerbations. She co-founded Synairgen, a spin-out company developing inhaled interferon-beta therapies, and pioneered in vitro models to study lung diseases ethically. Her work has identified key pathological mechanisms, such as defective epithelial barrier function in asthma and collagen abnormalities in IPF.
Professor Davies leads a multidisciplinary group collaborating with clinicians, academics, and industry. She has secured grants from prestigious sponsors including the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, and British Lung Foundation. Her research has led to patents and clinical trials for novel therapies targeting respiratory conditions.
She is affiliated with the Institute for Life Sciences and Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute. Notable contributions include disentangling the role of ADAM33 in asthma pathogenesis and advancing treatments for viral-induced asthma exacerbations. Her work bridges laboratory science and clinical applications, with a focus on unmet medical needs.
