Gunilla Westergren-Thorsson is a Professor at Lund University and Director of the Lund University Bioimaging Center. Her research focuses on chronic inflammatory lung diseases, including COPD, asthma, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome. She leads multiple projects at the Faculty of Medicine, exploring the role of the extracellular matrix (ECM), mesenchymal stem cells, proteomics, and glycosaminoglycans in lung pathogenesis.
- Principal Investigator: Swedish Heart Lung Foundation projects on COPD and IPF
- Affiliated with Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine and eSSENCE e-Science Collaboration
Her work emphasizes the interplay between tissue remodeling, inflammation, and regeneration in lung diseases. Recent publications highlight:
- ECM-driven fibrosis in COPD and IPF
- Role of metal metabolism (Ca, Zn, Fe) in lung pathology
- Proteomic biomarkers in post-COVID lung abnormalities
- Mechanotransduction in fibroblast activity
She supervises PhD students and contributes to advancing lung tissue engineering through physiomimetic models and bioimaging technologies.
