Donald Bruce Dingwell is a Professor and Chair of Mineralogy and Petrology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, where he has served as founding Director of the Department for Earth and Environmental Sciences since 2002. His career spans leadership roles across Europe and North America, including Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences (LMU Munich, 2004-2005) and Secretary General of the European Research Council (2011-2013).
- Education: B.Sc. in Geology/Geophysics (Memorial University of Newfoundland, 1980), Ph.D. in Geology (University of Alberta, 1984), and Habilitation in Geochemistry (University of Bayreuth, 1992).
Research interests include experimental volcanology, magma rheology, and silicate melt behavior under extreme conditions. His work focuses on understanding explosive volcanism mechanisms through laboratory experiments, numerical modeling, and field studies of volcanoes like Etna, Merapi, and Colima.
Scientific awards and honors include election to the Royal Society (2021), the Harry H. HESS Medal (2020), and the German Order of Merit (2013). He has received honorary doctorates from Simon Fraser University (2023) and the University of Alberta (2012), among others.
