Yan Lavallée is a Professor and Chair of Igneous Petrology and Volcanology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich), Germany, since 2022. He holds a Doctor Rerum Naturalium (Dr. rer. nat.) from LMU Munich and has held academic positions at institutions including the University of Liverpool and the University of Strasbourg. His research focuses on volcanic processes, magma rheology, and rock physics, with emphasis on experimental and field-based studies of volcanic systems.
- Education:
- B.Sc. (Honours) in Earth and Planetary Sciences, McGill University (2001)
- M.Sc. in Space Studies, University of North Dakota (2003)
- Dr. rer. nat. in Volcanology, LMU Munich (2008)
Research Interests: Experimental geomaterials, magma dynamics, volcanic eruptions, and rheology of magmatic systems. His work bridges laboratory experiments and field observations to understand processes like magma ascent, fragmentation, and volcanic hazards.
Key Awards: Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (2017), James B. Macelwane Medal (2017), and Wager Medal (2017). He has led major grants, including an ERC Starting Grant (2012) and contributed to projects like the Krafla Magma Testbed (KMT).
Grants & Collaborations: Involved in geothermal energy projects and international collaborations on volcanic risk assessment. His research group focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to volcano science.
