Professor Dominic Rowe is a Professor of Neurology at Macquarie University, leading the Motor Neuron Disease Research Centre (MNDRC) and the Neurology Clinic at MQ Health. Appointed in 2007, he is Australia's youngest Professor of Neurology. His research focuses on MND, Parkinson's disease, and neurodegenerative diseases, with significant contributions to clinical trials, biomarker discovery, and gene therapy. He leads over 80 staff at the MNDRC, managing a $13M annual budget and overseeing 43 active projects. Notable achievements include founding the Neurodegenerative Diseases Biobank and pioneering the ATLAS clinical trial for genetic MND using antisense oligonucleotide therapy. Recognized with the Order of Australia (2012), he has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and holds patents in Parkinson’s and MND diagnostics. His work emphasizes patient-centered drug development and translational research.
- Affiliations: Macquarie Medical School, Motor Neuron Disease Research Centre, MQ Health
- Research Interests: Motor Neuron Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Clinical Trials, Neurodegenerative Biomarkers, Gene Therapy
His research spans genetics, proteomics, and cellular signaling, with a focus on translating discoveries into clinical applications. Key projects include the WAVE study for c9orf72-related MND and trials exploring novel therapeutics. His clinical contributions include managing over 200 MND and 800 Parkinson’s patients annually. He runs the Clinical Trials Unit at MQ, initiating Australia's first MND trials in 2012.
Recent articles highlight advancements in transcriptomic analysis of ALS, non-invasive ventilation protocols, and C9orf72-associated pathologies. Grants and collaborations emphasize global leadership in MND research, with Macquarie as a global recruitment hub for trials like ATLAS. His lab's Biobank curates >80,000 biospecimens, supporting interdisciplinary research.
