Prof. Dr. Dirk Steuernagel is Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Regensburg since 2010, affiliated with the Faculty of Philosophy, Arts, History and Social Sciences. He also serves as Head of the Center for Classical Studies at the University of Regensburg since 2012 and is a member of the supporting group of the Research Training Group 2337 "Metropolitanism in the Pre-Modern Era" since 2020. Additionally, he is Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute and a Regular Member of the German Archaeological Institute.
His educational background includes:
- Magister Artium in Classical Archaeology, Ancient History, Auxiliary Sciences of Classical Studies and Latin Philology from the University of Hamburg (1991)
- Doctorate from the University of Hamburg (1995)
- Habilitation from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt/M. (2002)
Prof. Steuernagel's research primarily focuses on Etruscology and early Roman history, with special emphasis on etruscan, italics, and Roman-republican artworks, their iconography, function and significance. His work also encompasses the history of Etruscology as a historical and archaeological science, urban studies and architecture of the Roman Imperial period in Italy and the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire, religious and social historical investigations related to Greek sacred architecture, and research on Hellenistic residential architecture in Sicily. His methodology combines archaeological analysis with historical context to understand cultural transformations in antiquity.
His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the interaction between religious practices and urban spaces, particularly examining how sacred architecture functioned within social and political contexts. Recent work has centered on the Upper Agora in Ephesos, investigating its transformation from a Hellenistic marketplace to a Roman imperial forum, reflecting broader patterns of urban development in the ancient Mediterranean world.
Among his notable scholarly recognitions are:
- Travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute (1995-1996)
- Fellowship at the Research College "Urban Culture of the Roman Imperial Period" (1997-1998)
- Habilitation scholarship from the German Research Foundation (1999-2001)
- Membership in the German Archaeological Institute
Prof. Steuernagel currently leads several significant research projects including "Bibione Attica: Discovering the Past" and research on "The Upper Agora in Ephesos: Planning and transformation processes of urban space between Hellenism and the Roman Imperial period," funded by the German Research Foundation. He also oversees the cataloging of Hellenistic Etruscan ash urns in the State Museums Berlin as part of the "Sculpture Network" of Berlin museums. His editorial work includes the "Regensburger Klassikstudien" series, which he co-edits with Christian Kunze.
His academic leadership extends to directing the Center for Classical Studies at the University of Regensburg and serving on the editorial boards of "Istanbuler Mitteilungen" and "Archeologia Veneta. Journal of Ancient Studies on North-Eastern Italy."
