His research has been supported by prestigious fellowships from the German Archaeological Institute and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
His primary research interests include Hellenistic and Roman sacred and funerary architecture, urban development in Roman provinces, cultural identity in the eastern Roman Empire, and architectural ornamentation. He has led field projects in Syria (Shahba/Philippopolis) and contributed extensively to the understanding of temple structures in Commagene and grave monuments in Cologne and Xanten.
Oenbrink's recent publications reflect a strong focus on architectural fragments, temple design, and urban surveys in ancient Syria and Germany. His work demonstrates a consistent thematic thread: the interplay between local traditions and Roman imperial influence in architectural expression.
Scientific awards and fellowships include:
- Research Fellowship, Romano-Germanic Museum, Cologne (2003)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, North Rhine-Westphalia (2002–2003)
- Graduate College Fellowship, University of Cologne (1994–1995)

He has held teaching appointments at multiple universities and continues to contribute to public archaeology through museum collaborations and editorial work.
He is currently involved in the 'Limes und Legion' project at the University of Bonn, focusing on the funerary monuments of Roman Bonn's necropolises. His work integrates field archaeology, architectural analysis, and material culture studies to reconstruct the cultural landscape of Roman military and urban centers.
