Dilan Okcuoglu is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow and Researcher in the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University. She is leading an externally funded research project titled 'State-building and Control in Borderlands (SCB)' under Horizon Europe, supported by the UKRI Guarantee Fund, active from September 2023 to September 2025.
Her research focuses on the mechanisms of state authority and legitimacy in borderlands, particularly in the Kurdish regions of Turkey bordering Iraq, Iran, and Syria. Using mixed methods such as process-tracing, multi-sited ethnography, and qualitative interviews, she investigates everyday practices of state-making, land registration, settlement policies, displacement, and landscape nationalization.
The interdisciplinary nature of her work contributes to political science, conflict studies, and diaspora studies, with a particular emphasis on gendered dynamics in state-land-people relationships. Her project provides empirical depth for scholars and policymakers engaged in peacebuilding and border governance.
