Dieter Dietz

Dieter Dietz is Associate Professor and Director of the Section of Architecture at EPFL, where he leads the ALICE laboratory focused on architectural design and spatial conception. Educated at ETH Zurich and The Cooper Union, his career includes professional experience with Diane Lewis Architects in New York and Herzog & de Meuron in Basel. His research explores collective agency in space, protostructures, and the intersection of architecture with urban and landscape design.

Research interests include transcalar architectural projects investigating the dialogue between form and usage through concepts of 'protostructures' and 'Architectures of Contribution'. The ALICE laboratory develops design methodologies for large-group processes and spatial negotiations.

Key projects include the HOUSE series installations demonstrating collective authorship in architectural production, with international exhibitions at Versailles, Zurich, and Brussels. Research has been recognized through nominations for the Swiss Design Award and publications in major architectural journals.
