Prof. Dr. Dierk Thomas is a Senior Physician and Member of the Management Board at Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD), affiliated with the Department of Cardiology, Angiology, and Pulmonology. He leads the Group Molecular and Translational Cardiac Electrophysiology and serves as Head of Electrophysiology at the Heidelberg Center for Cardiac Arrhythmias and the Institute for Cardiomyopathies. His roles include clinical leadership in cardiac electrophysiology and research into ion channelopathies.
Education highlights include a Habilitation in cardiac electrophysiology (2010) and a medical degree from Heidelberg University. He has held academic positions since 2002, including clinical roles at UKHD and research stints in the U.S. (University of Chicago and Case Western Reserve University).
Research focuses on molecular mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias, ion channel dysfunction, and translational therapies. Key clinical interests include catheter ablation of complex arrhythmias and managing ion channelopathies. He has pioneered work on K2P potassium channels and antiarrhythmic gene therapy.
Recipient of prestigious awards such as the Julius-Klob-Publikationspreis and Wolfgang-Trautwein-Forschungspreis, he is a Fellow of the American Heart Association and European Society of Cardiology. Clinical specialties include invasive electrophysiology and 3D mapping technologies.
