Diego Loayza is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY), within the School of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on telomere biology and molecular mechanisms of chromosome stability in human cells.
- Education:
- PostDoctoral Fellow, Rockefeller University
- PhD (1998), Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
- MA (1992), Princeton University
- BS (1990), University of Geneva
Research Interests: Dr. Loayza investigates telomere function, particularly the role of the shelterin complex protein POT1 in regulating telomerase activity and maintaining telomere integrity. His work examines how POT1 interacts with telomeric DNA and coordinates with other shelterin components (TIN2/TRF1) to control telomere length and prevent cellular senescence.
Publications Overview: His research is highlighted in key publications analyzing POT1's molecular interactions, DNA binding specificity, and its role in telomere elongation. These studies contribute to understanding telomere maintenance mechanisms critical for cellular aging and cancer biology.
