Titia de Lange is the Leon Hess Professor and Director of the Anderson Center for Cancer Research at Rockefeller University. She is a pioneering scientist in telomere biology, known for discovering the shelterin complex and elucidating its role in protecting chromosome ends from DNA damage pathways. Her work bridges molecular biology, genetics, and cancer research.
Research Focus: De Lange’s research centers on telomeres—the protective caps at chromosome ends—and their implications in aging and cancer. She identified key telomere-associated proteins (TRF1, TRF2) and the shelterin complex, which sequesters telomeres into t-loops to prevent erroneous DNA repair. Her studies link telomere dysfunction to genome instability and tumorigenesis.
