Diego Diel is an Associate Professor at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, where he leads the Diel Research Lab. His academic foundation includes a DVM (2004), MS (2007), and PhD (2010) from the Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil. Prior to Cornell, he held positions at South Dakota State University (Assistant Professor/Section Leader), the University of Illinois, and the USDA Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory.
His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of virus-host interactions, emphasizing viral immune evasion, pathogenesis, and applied outcomes like vaccine development, diagnostic assays, and livestock biosecurity. Key themes include antiviral immunity, recombinant vaccine platforms (e.g., Orf virus vectors), and emerging swine viruses like Senecavirus A and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus.
Diel's scientific awards include a USDA Certificate of Merit (2013) for mentoring and service, and a CNPq/Brazil Graduate Fellowship (2005–2007). He maintains active affiliations with the American Society for Virology, American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, and other professional societies.
