Diane McKnight is a Professor and Director of the Center for Water, Earth Science and Technology at the University of Colorado Boulder. She holds a Ph.D. from MIT and specializes in Aquatic Ecology, Limnology, and Hydrology. Her research focuses on dissolved organic matter, stream ecology, and biogeochemical processes in polar and aquatic environments. McKnight has received numerous awards, including the John Dalton Medal from the European Geophysical Union and membership in the National Academy of Engineering.
Her teaching includes courses like Applied Ecology and Applied Stream Ecology. Key research contributions span Antarctic lake ecosystems, dissolved organic carbon dynamics, and environmental impacts of anthropogenic activities. Collaborations with students and interdisciplinary teams highlight her mentorship role. McKnight’s work bridges environmental science with engineering solutions for water quality and ecological management.
- Education: B.S., M.S., Ph.D. from MIT (1975, 1978, 1979)
- Labs/Teams: Center for Water, Earth Science and Technology
- Grants: Multiple NSF-funded projects on polar and environmental systems
Her publications reflect expertise in organic matter characterization, microbial ecology, and environmental monitoring technologies. Recent work addresses climate-driven disturbances and anthropogenic impacts on ecosystems.
