Diane Marie McKnight is a Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. She holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (MIT, 1975), an M.S. in Civil Engineering (MIT, 1978), and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering (MIT, 1979). Her research focuses on limnology, aquatic ecology, and reactive transport of metals and organic materials in streams and rivers, with significant contributions to Antarctic ecosystem studies and climate change impacts on water resources.
Her honors include the Robert Horton Medal (American Geophysical Union), John Dalton Medal (European Geophysical Union), and election to the National Academy of Engineering. She is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Recent publications highlight her work on wildfire impacts on water quality, microbial mat dynamics in glacial streams, and climate-driven changes in metal concentrations in Rocky Mountain watersheds. Her research integrates field observations, analytical chemistry, and biogeochemical modeling to address environmental challenges.
Professional affiliations include the International Humic Substances Society, American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, and the Phycological Society of America. Her studies often address global environmental issues, such as the role of natural organic matter in the Anthropocene and microbial responses to climate disturbances.
