Kelly Aho is an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University, affiliated with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Department of Integrative Biology. As an aquatic biogeochemist, her research focuses on carbon and nitrogen cycling in inland waters, emphasizing their role in global greenhouse gas budgets and ecosystem connectivity.
- Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES), Michigan State University
- Department of Integrative Biology (IBIO), Michigan State University
Her work combines field-scale studies with statistical and process-based models to investigate greenhouse gas emissions from streams and rivers. A unique aspect involves analyzing dissolved greenhouse gases as proxies for aquatic metabolism, disturbance impacts, and terrestrial-aquatic subsidies. She specializes in concentration-discharge dynamics, photodegradation of organic matter, and drought/storm responses in freshwater systems.
Recent publications highlight global carbon routing in river networks, methane source limitations, and drought-induced productivity shifts. Awards include recognition as an AGU Outstanding Reviewer (2019) and participation in the NEON Ambassador Program (2023).
- AGU Outstanding Reviewer (2019)
- NEON Ambassador Program (2023)
She leads the Aho Biogeochemistry Lab, which explores freshwater-climate interactions and develops novel measurement frameworks for aquatic carbon cycling.
