Derek Patrick

Dr Derek Patrick is a Lecturer in the School of History at the University of St Andrews, joining in January 2018. He holds a PhD from the University of St Andrews (2002) and an MA from the same institution. His research focuses on Early Modern Scottish political history, the Scottish Parliament (1689–1707), the 1688–89 Revolution, the 1707 Union, and the Black Watch during World War I. He co-edited and contributed to The Black Watch and the Great War: Rediscovered Histories From the Regimental Family (2020), analyzing key battles and soldier narratives. Dr Patrick has supervised numerous PhD students, including Nicola Cowmeadow and Norman Fraser Brown. He received awards such as the Courier Impact 100 (2014–2018) and the College of Arts Public Engagement Award (2014). His work bridges academic research and public engagement, exemplified by the Great War Dundee Commemorative Project and frequent invited lectures on Scottish military history.
