Dr Alexia Grosjean is an Honorary Research Fellow at the School of History, University of St Andrews. Her research focuses on early modern European military and political history, with particular emphasis on the Thirty Years' War, Scottish and British involvement in Scandinavian military and political institutions, and cultural exchanges between the British Isles and Scandinavia. She has authored books, peer-reviewed articles, and datasets exploring topics such as military organization, parliamentary systems, and the roles of musicians and soldiers in early modern societies.
Research Interests: Her work delves into the interconnectedness of European states during the 17th century, analyzing military strategies, political dynamics, and cultural interactions. Key themes include the Swedish army, Scottish generals in continental conflicts, and the socio-political structures of early modern Scandinavia.
Publications: Her articles and books highlight contributions to understanding military structures, such as the Swedish army during the Thirty Years' War, and cultural exchanges like the service of British musicians in Scandinavian courts. She has also published on Scottish involvement in Swedish parliamentary systems and the lives of ordinary soldiers through primary sources like letters.
Labs/Teams: She co-created the Scotland Scandinavia and Northern European Biographical Database (1580-1707), a collaborative dataset exploring transnational networks in early modern Europe.
