Joshua Hickford is a Researcher at the University of Oxford, affiliated with New College. His research focuses on the regimental system's influence on British military culture from 1881 to 1918, supervised by Adrian Gregory.
Joshua’s work investigates how regimental identities functioned as surrogate families, fostering communal pride and loyalty among soldiers. His study spans pre-war professional armies to the rapid mobilization of civilian volunteers during the First World War, and the subsequent impact of conscription introduced in 1916. This research intersects with themes of Military Culture, 20th-century British History, and Social Identity in Wartime.
He previously pursued a Master’s degree at St. Hilda’s College, Oxford, and a BA at Queen Mary University of London, where his dissertation addressed British interventions in the Russian Civil War. As a DPhil student, he has access to War Office documents, soldiers’ memoirs, and regimental publications to analyze the system’s adaptability amid wartime demands.
