Professor Helen Parr is a historian of contemporary British political and social history, affiliated with the School of Social Sciences at Keele University since 2004. She holds the title of Professor of Modern and Contemporary History and serves as PGR lead, SPGS PGT coordinator, and Global Studies Research Cluster lead. Her research focuses on Britain’s relations with the EU, Cold War nuclear policies, and British-French relations. Parr’s most notable work, Our Boys: The Story of a Paratrooper, explores the social and cultural history of the Parachute Regiment during the Falklands War. This book won multiple awards, including the Templer Medal and Duke of Wellington Medal for Military History.
Her education includes a History degree from Clare College, Cambridge, and a Contemporary British History degree from Queen Mary College, University of London. Research interests span EU integration, Labour Party dynamics, and military history. Parr’s work bridges academic rigor with public engagement, reflected in her media appearances on BBC Radio 4 and Guardian reviews. She has received grants, including a British Academy Small Grant for Falklands War research.
Her recent articles address Brexit’s complexities and military history topics like the Falklands War’s naval dynamics. Awards highlight her contributions to historical scholarship.
