Professor Niall Barr is a Professor of Military History in the Defence Studies Department at King's College London. He holds academic affiliations with the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy and the School of Security Studies. Educated at the University of St Andrews, he has taught at institutions including the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, and the Staff College since 2000, where he instructs military courses and conducts battlefield tours. His research focuses on the Anglo-American alliance in World War II, Scottish military traditions, and the role of logistics and food in warfare. He leads projects such as the study of food’s role in conflict and the Mediterranean campaigns of World War II.
Professor Barr’s academic contributions span military historiography, including his work on the El Alamein battles and Eisenhower’s leadership. He actively participates in research groups like the First and Second World War Research Groups and the Sir Michael Howard Centre for the History of War. His grants include funding from the British Academy and the Australian Army for projects on Anglo-American military cooperation and desert warfare. He advises PhD students in military history topics and has organized conferences on conflict history, veterans affairs, and strategic studies.
Barr’s publications explore operational strategies, alliances, and logistical challenges in major conflicts. His recent work on the BEF’s role in World War I’s Hundred Days campaign underscores his expertise in tactical analysis. He has presented globally, including at the Tunisian Institute of Strategic Studies, and engages with public events like D-Day commemorations through the Cormorant Club.
