Denise Kettering-Lane serves as Associate Professor of Brethren Studies and Director of the Master of Arts Program at Bethany Theological Seminary, where her work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary Brethren practice. Her expertise centers on German Pietism's gender dynamics and the evolution of Church of the Brethren rituals, informed by extensive archival research.
Her academic foundation includes:
- Ph.D. in Religious Studies, University of Iowa (2009)
- M.T.S., Candler School of Theology, Emory University (2002)
- B.A. in Religion, Ashland University (2000)
Dr. Kettering-Lane's research reveals how religious practices like the holy kiss transformed within Brethren communities while negotiating gender roles and biblical interpretation. Her scholarship connects 17th-century German Pietism to modern Anabaptist traditions, demonstrating how ritual adaptations reflect broader theological shifts. This work appears in publications examining Dan West's peace initiatives and Old Testament festival interpretations within Brethren worship.
Her scholarly contributions have earned significant recognition:
- T. Anne Cleary International Dissertation Research Fellowship (2008)
- Seashore Dissertation Fellowship, University of Iowa (2008-2009)
- Louis Pennigroth Teaching Award (2006)
- Marguerite Blough Essay Award (2004)
- Multiple University of Iowa Summer Language Scholarships
As MA Program Director, she mentors students across three specializations while serving on the Brethren Historical Committee and editing Brethren Life and Thought journal. Her leadership connects academic rigor with practical ministry formation, particularly through archival research opportunities at the Brethren Historical Library and Archives where she previously worked.
