Jennifer Scheper Hughes is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of California, Riverside, specializing in the history of religion with a focus on Mexican and Mexican American Catholic communities. She combines historical analysis with material culture studies to explore devotional practices and religious transformation in the Americas.

Research Interests: Hughes examines the intersection of spirituality, materiality, and cultural-historical change. Her work spans lived religion, religious demography, and ritual practice, particularly in colonial and modern Latin American contexts. Current projects investigate the religious dimensions of 16th-century epidemics and their impact on Christianization efforts.
