David Morgan

David Morgan is a Professor of Religious Studies and Art, Art History, and Visual Studies at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He currently chairs the Department of Religious Studies (2023–present) and has previously held the position from 2013–2019. His academic career began at Duke in 2008 after earning a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Chicago (1990).

Research focuses on material religion, visual culture, and the intersection of images with religious practice. Key interests include the role of images in enchantment, materiality in religious studies, and the history of religious artifacts. Recent publications explore transactional imagery, nationalism in religious iconography, and the agency of visual objects.

Publications highlight his work on Christian devotional imagery, American religious display, and the material dynamics of religion. His book Images at Work (2018) and upcoming The Thing about Religion (2021) exemplify his interdisciplinary approach.
