Professor Deidre Pike is a faculty member in the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication at Cal Poly Humboldt. She advises the student newspaper The Lumberjack and teaches courses such as Beginning Reporting, Environmental Reporting, and Media Literacy. Previously, she served as department chair and taught at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and the University of Nevada, Reno. Her research focuses on environmental themes in media, media literacy, and animation studies. She has authored two books: Enviro-Toons: Green Themes in Animated Cinema and Television (2012) and Media Literacy: Seeking Honesty, Independence and Productivity in Today's Mass Messages (2014), the latter funded by the Open Society Foundation.
Her professional background includes roles as a newspaper reporter, editor, and freelance writer. Her work bridges journalism practices with critical media analysis, emphasizing environmental communication and digital literacy. Pike's recent publications explore topics ranging from environmental crime reporting to podcast innovation and academic policy compliance in course materials.
Her academic contributions span both theoretical and applied domains, with a focus on equipping students to critically engage with media and address ecological themes through storytelling.
