Alexa Capeloto is an Associate Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York (CUNY). She teaches journalism and co-coordinates the Digital Media and Journalism Minor. As faculty adviser, she oversees the student newspaper, The John Jay Sentinel. Her research focuses on Freedom of Information laws, particularly examining the intersection of privatization and public transparency.
Educated at the University of California, Berkeley (B.A., English, 1999) and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism (M.S., 2000), she has extensive professional experience as a reporter and editor at The Glendale News-Press, The Detroit Free Press, and The San Diego Union-Tribune, where she served as enterprise editor.
Capeloto is actively involved in professional organizations including the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), College Media Association, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and National Association for Media Literacy Education. Her scholarly work bridges legal frameworks and journalistic practice, emphasizing accountability journalism and media literacy.
