Deborah Norin-Kuehn serves as a Voice Instructor within the Voice Department at the Eastman School of Music, specializing in contemporary vocal repertoire since her 1994 New York City debut. An internationally recognized soprano, she has premiered numerous modern works while performing traditional opera and art song across the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia with ensembles including Collide-O-Scope, Ensemble 21, and the Opera Company of Philadelphia under conductors such as Oliver Knussen and Peter Bay.
Her educational background includes an Artist Diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied under Todd Duncan (Gershwin's original Porgy), and graduate degrees from the Eastman School of Music.
Norin-Kuehn's artistic focus centers on bridging avant-garde and traditional vocal styles, with particular expertise in contemporary classical music and opera. Her acclaimed interpretation of Milton Babbitt's Du demonstrates her ability to synthesize diverse musical eras, as noted by Phyllis Bryn Julson. She actively promotes new music through premieres and maintains scholarly interest in Italian art song evolution, evidenced by her lecture series "The Evolution of the 24 Italian 'Hits'".
As an educator with over thirty years of experience, she has mentored college students who earned scholarships to graduate programs at Eastman and the New England Conservatory, while her private musical theatre students secured placements at institutions including NYU (Tisch), Berklee, and Northwestern University. She regularly adjudicates voice competitions and presents master classes internationally.
