Hugh Murphy

Hugh Murphy is a tenured Associate Professor of Music in the Voice and Opera Studies department at Purchase College's Conservatory of Music (SUNY). He previously served on the faculty of Mannes College of Music and as a visiting faculty member at the Eastman School of Music.

Research and Artistic Interests: Murphy specializes in opera conducting and vocal performance across historical periods, with deep expertise in German and French Art Song interpretation. His work bridges performance practice and pedagogy, focusing on operatic literature, stylistic analysis, and collaborative piano techniques for vocal repertoire spanning early opera to contemporary works.

Scientific Awards:

• Best Opera of the Year (National Opera Association) for Purchase Opera productions under his direction

Advising and Professional Activities: Murphy coaches voice majors at Purchase College and maintains a distinguished roster of professional clients performing at premier institutions including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera Covent Garden, l'Opéra de la Bastille, and Bayerische Staatsoper. He serves on the faculty of the “Si Parla Si Canta” Vocal Workshop in Urbania, Italy, and maintains an active international career as a collaborative pianist.

Ensembles and Teams: Murphy conducts the Purchase Opera and Purchase Symphony Orchestra, leading critically acclaimed productions reviewed by The New York Times and Opera News Magazine. His collaborative work extends to Apollo's Banquet (18th-century dance/music ensemble) and world-premiere recording projects with Albany Records.
