Deborah Nidel is a Lecturer and PhD candidate at the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology at Utrecht University. She specializes in Criminal Law, European Criminal Law, and International Criminal Law, with a focus on Security in Open Societies. Her research examines Joint Investigation Teams (JITs) and the rights of suspects in criminal proceedings. She is affiliated with the Utrecht Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in Europe (RENFORCE) and the research group Empirical Research into Institutions for Conflict Resolution (ERI).
Deborah completed her PhD trajectory since February 2021, including a traineeship at Eurojust. She holds an LLB in Dutch Law (2018), an LLM in Public International Law (cum laude, 2020), and an LLM in Global Criminal Law (summa cum laude, 2021) from the University of Groningen.
Her recent publications analyze legal frameworks for transnational cooperation, including extradition procedures and normativity in JIT structures. She contributes to debates on universal jurisdiction and due process in globalized criminal justice systems.
