Deborah McLaughlin is a Professor in the Dance Education program at Radford University since August 2005. She teaches courses in dance pedagogy, improvisation, choreography, dance history and philosophy, somatics, and dance production. Her creative work focuses on interdisciplinary, multimedia dance pieces addressing Appalachian beauty and social justice themes, supported by faculty research grants that enabled touring opportunities for students. She also facilitates study abroad programs at the International Dublin Dance Festival and in London.
- BFA and MFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah
- Co-founder of The Movement Society dance company (10-year artistic director)
- Collaborated with multimedia artist Lee Nagrin
Her current research explores dance for the camera through both still photography and video, integrating Appalachian cultural narratives into contemporary dance practice.
McLaughlin’s extensive freelance career includes teaching at Primary Children’s residential psychiatric program, Children’s Dance Theatre, Westminster College, Bank Street School for Children, and SUNY’s FIT. She has conducted workshops for inner-city youth and senior populations.
