Anna Williams

Anna Williams is a Lecturer in Dance at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD), where she holds an academic role alongside her freelance artistic practice. She specializes in choreography, creative pedagogy, and site-responsive performance. Her responsibilities include leading modules for BA1 Creative Practice and BA1 Research Project, mentoring postgraduate students, and participating in pastoral care through roles like the Student Review Board. Anna has a strong background in curriculum development, focusing on peer-to-peer assessment strategies and innovative teaching methods.

Anna’s educational background includes a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance and Choreography, a PG Dip in Dance Performance, and an MA in Teaching and Facilitation (2023). Her research emphasizes choreographic processes, feedback mechanisms in creative work, and the integration of dance beyond traditional studios.

Her research interests span choreography, improvisation, and the interplay between movement and space. Anna actively explores how dance can engage audiences in immersive and interactive experiences, as seen in her work with Anatomical’s family shows and site-responsive projects. She also investigates the role of dance in children’s education and community engagement.

Anna’s awards include the Prix Individuel (ADAMI) Performance Award and a South Bank Show Award nomination for her choreography. Her work Clearing reached the finals of The Place Prize for Choreography in 2008. She has collaborated with renowned companies such as Russell Maliphant Dance Company, Ricochet Dance Company, and Lyon Opera Ballet, showcasing her work globally.

In advising and professional development, Anna supports students through regular tutorials and pastoral care roles. She facilitates industry connections via placements with touring companies like Anatomical. Her professional experience includes over two decades of performance and choreography across dance, theatre, opera, and live art.

Anna is co-artistic director of Anatomical, creators of interactive family shows such as The Doodle Dance Show and The Buildy-uppy Dance Show, which have toured widely. She has also been involved with Vincent Dance Theatre, Opera North, and multiple international companies, reflecting her commitment to diverse artistic collaborations.
