Dawn McCusker is a Professor of Graphic Design and Coordinator of the Book Art Minor at James Madison University (JMU), where she has been a faculty member since 2001. She holds an M.F.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a B.F.A. from Eastern Michigan University.

Her research focuses on interdisciplinary design collaborations and spans typography, letterpress printing, artists’ books, book design, papermaking, and professional practice. She is the primary instructor for core courses such as typography, senior capstone, and book paper ink, and has taught nearly every course in JMU's graphic design program.
McCusker has received grants exceeding $100,000 from organizations including the Windgate Charitable Foundation and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Her design work has been showcased in competitions like AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers and exhibits at institutions such as the Library of Congress and Yale University.
She has presented her work at conferences including the College Book Art Association (Philadelphia, 2018) and the European Academy of Design (Porto, Portugal). McCusker also leads the Madison Book Lab, an initiative that integrates art and design, and maintains a design practice serving clients like the Black Rock Institute Press and the Harlem Symphony Orchestra.
