David Russell is a Senior Lecturer in Music and Senior Music Performance Faculty in Cello at Wellesley College, where he has served on the teaching faculty since 2005 and currently directs Chamber Music. He maintains an active performance career as Principal Cello of Odyssey Opera and Opera Boston orchestras since 2010, and performs regularly with prominent New England ensembles including Cantata Singers and Ensemble, Worcester Chamber Music Society, and Emmanuel Music.

Russell specializes in contemporary and new music performance, with extensive work premiering and recording 20th/21st century compositions. His artistic focus spans solo cello, chamber ensembles, and orchestral contexts, featuring collaborations with cutting-edge groups like Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Firebird Ensemble. He has premiered works by major composers including David Lang, Marti Epstein, and Jorge Martin while recording significant repertoire by Chen Yi, Lukas Foss, and Lee Hyla.
Russell teaches foundational and advanced courses at Wellesley including Musical Literacies (MUS100) for introductory music students and Advanced Performance Seminar (MUS344), where he develops student artistry through weekly performances, private instruction, and constructive critique within a rigorous 14-hour weekly commitment framework.
He maintains active affiliations with major performance organizations including Odyssey Opera, Opera Boston, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Callithumpian Consort, and the Fromm Players at Harvard, while contributing to the New England contemporary music scene through groups like Dinosaur Annex and entelechron.
