Rebecca Thornblade is a Senior Music Performance Faculty member in Cello at Wellesley College, with additional affiliations including membership in the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and performances with Opera Boston, Chamber Orchestra of Boston, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and Cantata Singers. She has an extensive career as a chamber music and orchestral cellist, having performed with award-winning ensembles like the Fry Street and Avalon quartets and served as principal cellist for the New World Symphony and Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
Education
- Bachelor’s in Music from Oberlin Conservatory, studying under Norman Fischer and Peter Rejto
- Master’s in Music from The Juilliard School, studying with Joel Krosnick
Performance & Teaching Experience
Ms. Thornblade has participated in prestigious programs including the Aspen Music Festival Advanced Quartet Studies, Pacific Music Festival in Japan, and Spoleto Festival U.S.A. She has collaborated with renowned quartets such as the Vermeer, Juilliard, Orion, and Takacs Quartets, as well as members of the Cleveland and Emerson Quartets. Her teaching roles include work with the MusiCorps Program, Midori Foundation, Chamber Music America’s Rural Residency Program, and as Adjunct Professor of Cello at Rhode Island College. She was also a chamber music faculty member at Point Counterpoint in Vermont for seven years.

Ms. Thornblade has been featured on WGBH’s “Classical Performances” and has collaborated with notable musicians including flutist Carol Wincenc and pianist Randall Hodgkinson.
