Dr. David L. Ortega is a Professor and the Noel W. Stuckman Chair in Food Economics & Policy at Michigan State University's Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics within the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. He holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University, alongside degrees from Purdue and the University of Florida. His research focuses on food economics, consumer/producer decision-making, food marketing, agricultural development, and China's role in global food systems.
Dr. Ortega's work integrates research, teaching, and outreach, with significant international collaboration in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Notable contributions include evaluating U.S.-China agricultural trade dynamics, studying consumer behavior in emerging markets, and analyzing policy impacts on food systems. He frequently advises U.S. legislative bodies and media outlets like The New York Times and CNN, emphasizing his expertise in food policy and market strategies.
His teaching includes courses such as AFRE 817 Food Policy and AFRE 440 Food Marketing Management. Recent work highlights include leading a Québec-US agri-food trade roundtable, addressing the U.S. House Committee on U.S.-China agricultural relations, and publishing on topics like traceability technology in cattle production and Bangladeshi consumer preferences for biofortified rice.
