Dr. David Norman is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the School of Area Studies, History, Politics and Literature within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. He is also part of the Centre for European and International Studies Research (CEISR) and the Peace, Conflict and Security Research Group. His work focuses on Critical International Relations Theory, civil society organizations (CSOs), and democratisation processes in Southeast Asia.
His research explores CSO contributions to global governance democratisation, professionalisation of CSOs in Critical Security Studies, and Southeast Asian civil society dynamics. Teaching modules include Autocracy and Democracy, International Security in the Asia-Pacific, and Exploring International Relations at postgraduate level.
His articles analyse transnational civil society roles in nuclear non-proliferation, democratic public sphere construction, and governance reforms in Cambodia. He has also examined neoliberal microfinance strategies in poverty reduction contexts.
Dr. Norman holds a PhD and has held prior academic positions at the University of Birmingham, University of Nottingham, UNSW, and ANU. His research integrates IR theory with Southeast Asia case studies, emphasizing critical perspectives on global governance and security.
