Greg Raymond

Greg Raymond is a Senior Lecturer at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre within the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs at the Australian National University (ANU). He specializes in Southeast Asian politics, defense, and foreign relations, with a focus on transnational authoritarianism, Thai studies, and China's influence in the Mekong sub-region. He currently serves as President of the Association of Mainland Southeast Asia Scholars (AMSEAS) and as International Relations Editor for the journal Asian Studies Review. Prior to ANU, he worked in Australian government policy roles, including in the Department of Defence and the Australian Embassy in Bangkok.

Education: PhD, MA, BSc, and Dip Ed qualifications are held. His research examines security dynamics, strategic culture, and the interplay of great power competition in Southeast Asia. Notable projects include studies on Thai-Chinese military procurement, the Belt and Road Initiative, and the ASEAN-Australia Defence Postgraduate Scholarship Program.

Research trends in his articles highlight critical analyses of Thai electoral processes, transnational crime linked to Chinese enterprises, and regional security alliances like the US-Thailand partnership. His work bridges historical memory studies with contemporary geopolitical challenges, emphasizing the persistence of authoritarianism and civil-military dynamics in Thailand.

Grants and projects include leadership in initiatives such as the 'Mainland Southeast Asia Integration with Southern China' and a Visiting Fellowship at Kyoto University (2022–2024). He actively supervises research students and collaborates internationally, contributing to both academic discourse and policy-oriented analysis in Asia-Pacific security studies.
