Prof Sango Mahanty is a human geographer and Professor at the Resources, Environment and Development Department of the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University (ANU). His research focuses on the politics of social and environmental change, with a particular emphasis on Mainland Southeast Asia (Vietnam and Cambodia). He holds an ARC Future Fellowship and has conducted extensive work on nature-society transformations, including studies of hydropower dams, borderland markets, and pollution dynamics in poultry farming. His recent projects examine community responses to environmental 'ruptures' and the social dimensions of chemical use in agriculture.
Education: PhD in Human Geography from ANU.
Research Interests: Political ecology, agrarian change, development studies, and critical analyses of resource conflicts. Key geographic foci include Cambodia-Vietnam border regions and Vietnam's craft villages.

Collaborations involve civil society organizations and governments across Australia and the Asia-Pacific. He teaches postgraduate courses on environmental impact assessment and pollution/waste management.
Research outputs span over 77 peer-reviewed articles and 12 projects, with recent emphases on poultry industry chemical use and hydropower-induced socio-ecological disruptions. His work integrates interdisciplinary methodologies, including ethnographic and participatory approaches.
