Stephen McCarthy is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Government and International Relations at Griffith University, Australia. He is a member of the Griffith Asia Institute since 2006 and has held visiting roles at institutions such as the East-West Center and the Royal University of Phnom Penh. His research focuses on Southeast Asian politics, democracy and governance, political economy, and the rule of law, with a particular emphasis on Myanmar, Cambodia, and Fiji. He has authored books like The Political Theory of Tyranny in Singapore and Burma (2006) and co-edited Governance and Democracy in the Asia-Pacific (2020).
Dr. McCarthy holds a PhD (2003) and MA (1999) in Political Science from Northern Illinois University. His work explores topics such as civil society limitations in authoritarian contexts, environmental governance challenges, and the evolution of legal frameworks in transitioning democracies. He has supervised four doctoral students, including principal supervision of Mark Vong and Lucy West. His research outputs span peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and policy reports, addressing themes like militarized governance, electoral politics, and land tenure security.
Dr. McCarthy’s publications highlight regional dynamics in the Asia-Pacific, including analyses of democracy in Myanmar, Cambodia’s legal evolution, and the role of civil society in conflict zones. His work bridges theoretical political frameworks with empirical case studies, contributing to debates on authoritarianism, democratization, and policy reform in Southeast Asia.
