Dr. Morten Pedersen serves as Senior Lecturer in International and Political Studies at the University of New South Wales Canberra (Australian Defence Force Academy). Previously, he worked as a senior analyst for the International Crisis Group in Myanmar and has provided policy advisory services on Myanmar politics and development affairs for major international organizations including the United Nations, World Bank, European Commission, Australian government, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Martti Ahtisaari.
His research expertise spans Burmese politics and development affairs, human rights, and tools of international statecraft. He is currently preparing a multi-year comparative project on international human rights work in Burma, Cambodia and Vietnam. His work falls within the fields of Government and Politics of Asia and the Pacific, Human Rights, and International Relations.
Pedersen's scholarly output shows a consistent focus on human rights promotion in authoritarian contexts, particularly examining Western sanctions policies and UN mediation efforts in Myanmar. His research demonstrates expertise in negotiating human rights in pariah states and analyzing effective approaches for human rights promotion in highly repressive environments.
