Erin McAuliffe

Erin McAuliffe is an IPI Cybersecurity Fellow at the Jackson School of the University of Washington, specializing in Southeast Asian Studies with a focus on Myanmar’s political reforms, identity dynamics, land rights, and infrastructure. Her work bridges cybersecurity policy with regional expertise, including analysis of US-Myanmar relations.

• Education: M.A. in Southeast Asia Program, University of Washington.

Research Interests: Erin’s research examines the historical foundations of ethnic classification in colonial Myanmar, overlapping ethnic entitlements, and the socio-political challenges of modern infrastructure and land governance. She also explores cybersecurity strategies in geopolitical contexts and development projects in Southeast Asia.

Notable Contributions: Erin served as Senior Researcher on the Tableau Foundation and Enlightened Myanmar Research (EMR) Applied Research Project, investigating the intersection of technology and policy in Myanmar. Her work integrates field-based insights from northern Thailand, where she taught on a Fulbright Grant and collaborated with World Education Thailand and human rights organizations.

Scientific Awards:

• Southeast Asia Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellow in Burmese (2015–2017).

Professional Experience: Prior to her current role, Erin worked with the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) and the Committee for Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid in the German Parliament, focusing on political and social challenges in Myanmar.
