Greg Fealy is an Associate Professor and Senior Fellow in Indonesian Politics at the Department of Political and Social Change, Bell School of Asia-Pacific Affairs, ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. His research focuses on Indonesian politics, modern Islamic political history, democratisation, and jihadist ideology. He has held significant roles, including Head of the Department of Political and Social Change (2013-2018) and Chair of the Australia-Indonesia Institute (2016-present).
Fealy holds a BA (Hons) and PhD from Monash University. His career highlights include a 2021 AM Order of Australia for contributions to education and Australia-Indonesia relations, Visiting Professorships at Johns Hopkins University (2003) and Hebrew University (2019-2020), and consultancy roles with the Australian Government and civil society programs.
His research interests span Indonesian Islamist movements, counterterrorism, minority rights, and political Islam. He has authored and edited numerous books, including Contentious Belonging: The Place of Minorities in Indonesia (2019). Key projects include the Partnership in Islamic Education Scholarships (PIES) program and studies on Southeast Asian CVE strategies.
Fealy’s work bridges academic research and policy, addressing contemporary challenges such as democratic backsliding, religious radicalization, and minority inclusion in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
