Robert Cribb

Robert Cribb is a Professor at the Department of Political and Social Change, Coral Bell School of Asia-Pacific Affairs, Australian National University. His career includes roles as Director of the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (1997–1999), guest lecturer at Leiden University (1993), and researcher at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study. Educated at the University of Queensland (BA Hons) and SOAS, University of London (PhD, 1984), his research focuses on Indonesia and Southeast Asia, with themes in mass violence, national identity, environmental politics, and historical geography. Current projects include studies on Indonesian massacres, puppet states in Asia, and Japanese war crimes (1941–1945).

Research interests span colonial and postcolonial dynamics, war crimes, and environmental history. Notable works include analyses of detention camps in Asia, indigenous histories, and the historiography of Indonesia's 1965–66 killings. His work integrates historical methodologies with interdisciplinary approaches, addressing themes such as legal pluralism, decolonization, and transitional justice. Supervision focuses on doctoral candidates engaged in Southeast Asian studies and historical research.
