Professor Butt holds a BA LLB from the Australian National University and a PhD from the University of Melbourne. His educational background has provided the foundation for his deep expertise in Southeast Asian legal systems, particularly Indonesia's complex legal framework that blends customary (adat), Islamic, and Western legal traditions.
Professor Butt's research spans the full spectrum of Indonesian law, with particular focus on constitutional law, criminal justice, human rights, and legal reform. His work examines how Indonesia's legal system functions in practice, often highlighting the gap between formal law and actual implementation. He has made significant contributions to understanding Indonesia's Constitutional Court, anti-corruption mechanisms, electoral systems, and the interplay between Islamic law and state legal frameworks. His comparative approach investigates how legal norms are transplanted between jurisdictions and adapted to local contexts.
Analysis of Professor Butt's recent publications reveals a sustained focus on judicial independence, constitutional interpretation, and legal reform in Indonesia. His work demonstrates how Indonesia's Constitutional Court has evolved as a key institution in the country's democratic transition, while also examining persistent challenges including corruption, judicial dysfunction, and the implementation of legal reforms. His scholarship increasingly addresses contemporary issues such as environmental law, electoral administration, and the impact of Indonesia's new Criminal Code.
